Shepherd of the City welcomes native Philadelphians and people from around the globe, each with a unique story and specific personal challenges, but all who seek the forgiveness of sins and peace in Christ. The church is set in a highly diverse neighborhood where families from all over the world, particularly Southeast Asia, the Middle East, the Caribbean, and Eastern Europe, live and work. Shepherd reflects this diversity in its members and regular attendees. Pastor DeGroot frequently works with Iraqi Muslims and Pakistani Christians who come to ask for help as they re-locate and end up hearing about Christ and the Lutheran faith.
Those who regularly attend services usually have had no previous experience with the Lutheran faith and its rich history, so Pastor DeGroot spends many hours a week teaching the Small Catechism and answering questions.
